Un mondo eliocentrico

Di anno in anno Sonny cambiava nome all'Arkestra, a volte persino da un concerto all'altro, adattandolo allo spirito dell'occasione e alle sensazioni che desiderava esprimere. Messi in fila, alcuni di questi nomi formano una sorta di poesia concreta: Cosmic Space Jazz Group, Myth Science Arkestra, Solar Arkestra, Solar Myth Arkestra, Intergalactic Arkestra, Intergalactic Research Arkestra, Power of Astro-Infinity Arkestra, Solar-Hieroglyphics Arkestra, Nature-Immortality Arkestra, Solar-Science Arkestra, Solar-Nature Arkestra, Humanitarian Arkestra, Transmolecular Arkestra, American-Spirit Arkestra, Blue Universe Arkestra, Intergalactic Cosmo Arkestra, Cosmo Drama Arkestra, Cosmo Discipline Arkestra, Cosmo Jet Set Arkestra, Omniverse Arkestra, Outer Space Arkestra, Cosmic Stellar Arkestra, Disney Odissey Arkestra, Spaceage Jet-set Arkestra, Atlantis Odissey Arkestra, Astro-Solar Arkestra, Solar-Infinity Space Arkestra, 21st Century Echoes Arkestra, Intergalactic Infinity Arkestra, Intergalactic Astro-Solar Infinity Arkestra, Intergalactic Splendors of Love Arkestra, Outer-galactic Discipline Arkestra, Year 2000 Myth Science Arkestra, Astro Intergalactic Infinity Arkestra, Transgalactic Astro Infinity Arkestra, Omniverse Ultra 21st Century Arkestra, Intergalactic Myth-Science Solar Arkestra, Alter Destiny 21st Century Omniverse Arkestra, Astro Infinity Micro-Ensemble Unit, Love Adventure Arkestra, All-Star Inventions, All-Star Originals Arkestra, Chicago Reminiscence Arkestra...
Una volta un giornalista gli domandò come mai avesse appena modificato il nome del gruppo in Intergalactic Arkestra.
E' la dimensione in cui mi trovo al momento. Fra sei mesi potrei trasformarmi in qualcos'altro.

Altre volte lo stesso titolo veniva assegnato a due pezzi completamente diversi, come Reflections in Blue (1956 e 1986), Hours After (1958 e 1986) e The Others in Their World (1960 e fine anni Settanta). Un terzo gruppo di composizioni prendeva il titolo dalle date in cui venivano scritte, a volte più di una al giorno, come December 16, 1984A e December 16, 1984B. Nei suoi taccuini c'era persino una serie intitolata No Name #1, No Name #2 e via dicendo.
La stragrande maggioranza dei titoli, tuttavia, era programmatica nel senso più sfarzoso del termine, e le composizioni che alludevano all'Egitto, all'Africa e al mondo antico esprimevano un desiderio di fuga esotica (come Duke Ellington nella sua fase jungle): Africa, Aiethopia, Along the Tiber, Ancient Aiethopia, Ankh, Ankhnaton, Atlantis, Bimini, Dawn Over Israel, Egyptian Fantasy, The Nile, Nubia, Pharaoh's Den, Pre-Egyptian March, Pyramids, Solar Boats, Starship and Solar Boats, Sunset on the Nile, Tiny Pyramids e così via. Quindi arrivò la fase esotico-futurista: c'era la serie sul cosmo (Cosmic Chaos, The Cosmic Explorer, Cosmic Forces, Cosmic of Africa, Cosmo Approach Prelude, Cosmo Dance, Cosmo Energy), la serie sui pianeti (Blues on Planet Mars, Earth Primitive Earth, Jazz from an Unknown Planet, Jupiter Festival, Neptune, Next Stop Mars, On Jupiter), sul sole (Children of the Sun, Dancing in the Sun, Face the Sun, For the Sunrise, The Sun Myth, Sun Procession, Sun Song), sullo spazio (Celestial Love, Celestial Realms, Celestial Roads, Cluster of Galaxies, Distant Stars, Friendly Galaxy), sui viaggi spaziali (As Spaceships Approach, Cosmonaut-Astronaut Rendezvous, Journey Among the Stars, Journey Outward, Journey Stars Beyond, Journey through the Outer Darkness) e sul futuro (Future, Music from the World Tomorrow, New Horizons, Where is Tomorrow). In una fase precedente aveva portato il suo pubblico in quello che Amiri Baraka chiamava passato spirituale; ora cercava di portarli in un futuro spirituale.
