Terra Serpentes

Nel post dedicato ai Somewhere in Europe accennavamo alla loro partecipazione alla compilazione Terra Serpentes. Ecco oggi nella sua fosca grandezza il mastodontico sampler della World Serpent. Superfluo discettare sui singoli nomi: ci sono praticamente tutti gli artisti più interessanti dell'orizzonte compreso tra folk apocalittico e musica (post) industriale di metà anni Novanta. Non mancano un paio di nomi del passato ripescati da David Tibet: il bizzarro Tiny Tim e i tedeschi Sand, di cui i Current 93 ripresero When the May Rain Comes nel capolavoro Thunder Perfect Mind.

I Somewhere in Europe erano un duo formato da Andrea James e David Tiffen, fiancheggiatori dei Death in June (collaborarono ad esempio al capolavoro Brown Book). Tra il 1986 e il 1996 pubblicarono quattro cassette e due cd per la propria etichetta These Silences, distribuita dalla World Serpent insieme a label più note come Durtro, NER, Tursa e United Dairies. Proprio come associati a questa importante e controversa casa di distribuzione pubblicarono un brano, Oblique Realities, nel sampler Terra Serpentes del 1996. Quattro anni prima Douglas Pearce aveva ricambiato il favore ai Somewhere in Europe facendo uscire per la sua NER l'antologia Gestures, contenente materiale registrato fra il 1983 e il 1991. Semplice ma fortemente evocativa la musica del duo si presta ad accompagnarci all'incombente autunno.
